On Sunday we decided to do the Christkindlmarkt in Chiemsee. This is a special market as it is on a small island on a lake about 1 and a half hours south of here. We went down by train in a group of 6 people (and 1 dog) and met up with other friends down there. It was close to the mountains which were very beautiful.
After a typically big German lunch we wandered around the island in search of gluhwein that was sold in a pretty mug. The quest for good mugs has become a slight obsession. When you buy gluhwein you pay a deposit on the cups so if you wish to keep it you can. So far we have 4 mugs but we still have more markets to visit! Malcolm couldn't wait and had some straight away but eventually we found a place that sold it in little boot mugs. The island, Frauenchiemsee, only holds the markets for 2 weekends leading up to Christmas. Besides the markets it was nice just to walk around this small island (15 hectares). People live on this island and commute to the mainland on either ferries or small boats that they have on the island.
There is a real feel of Christmas here with all the lights and markets. We probably won't end up having a white Christmas but it will be cold!!
